15 Packs are 2017's Craft Beer Trend

Every year people prognosticate the beer trend for the coming year. Last year turned out to be the rise of the fruit beer, especially the fruit IPA as everyone hoped to deliver the next Grapefruit Sculpin to the market. Even Dogfish Head retired the original hop forward fruit beer, Aprihop, and released Flesh and Blood in its place.

Despite it not coming true, for the past several years people have been proclaiming it could be the year of the craft lager or the session beer. In some ways this is the year of the session beer if you look at what package it comes in. Since we are already a third done with the year I'm not really predicting the future much, but one thing is certain - The hot trend for 2017 is the 15 pack. It all started with Founders All Day IPA in 15 packs in 2014, and as their sales have skyrocketed every brewer is ready to hit the market with their own variation to stay competitive.
For awhile the only 15 pack of cans competing with All Day was faux craft beer Shock Top. Now just in time for the spring/summer ramp up many brewers are debuting their own 15 packs. 21st Amendment has the summer favorite Hell or High Watermelon and a variety pack. Southern Tier are releasing their own variety pack. Not to be outdone Oskar Blues will have 16 packs of Pinner. Even Ab Inbev wants more of the action with Golden Road debuting their session IPA Wolf Pup in a 15 pack. Realizing they were onto something Founders now has 3 seasonal 15 packs which last for a quarter of the year, Azacca IPA, Pc Pils and Mosaic. Everytime I turn around another 15 pack is popping up on sales sheets. I'm sure this is just the beginning and more brewers will follow.

I can't say that you heard it hear first, but 15 packs of cans are the hot trend of 2017. Fruit beers are hanging on strong, but they will start finding their way into the hot packaging of the moment to stay relevant. Considering many of these beers in 15 packs are session beers there could be an argument for it being the year of the session beer but many of these beers were already wildly popular before the 15 pack. What is making them brewery flagships and sales leaders is competitive pricing in a package formerly reserved for national macro breweries.

Hi, I'm Colin, I love a good hoppy IPA, but I can find immense enjoyment in a solid session beer, imperial stout, quadrupel or a nostalgic beer from my past.
