Bites and Pints Athens, Greece

It was a dark and stormy night ... no seriously it was a dark stormy night that was part of a grey stormy day where the rain wouldn't stop. All my thoughts of beautiful hot Mediterranean weather were lies punctuated by rain that cascaded off my umbrella. We'd had enough of trying to do the tourist sites, so we headed to the metro for my favorite kind of tourism - beer! Bites and Pints and The Local Pub were pretty far from the city center and I hoped that by the time we got there the rain would have eased. Unfortunately as I ascended the metro steps I was greeted by harsh wind and lashing rain. The weather made finding our destinations difficult and we got lost for over a half hour. Apparently they are located down a small side street on pedestrian street which is easy to miss on a rainy dark night.

No customers were inside once we finally made it through the door at Bites and Pints. We were quickly given a seat, a menu and shown the small draft list on the wall. The burgers were fairly cheap ranging from between 6 and 9 euro and looked a bit more exciting than the hot dogs and other menu items. I ordered a cheeseburger and a half pint of 5 AM Saint. The draft list wasn't impressive, but I'd heard that you can bring beer over from The Local Pub next door. After all the rain I wasn't willing to go back outside just yet though.

A few more people trickled through the door and soon after our food arrived. My burger was pretty good and reminded me of a classic fast food cheeseburger. The fries were pretty good as well, and I couldn't complain for the cheap price of €6. My wetter half ordered nachos that were sadly just generic doritos with a side of guacamole and salsa. She wasn't very impressed but was sick and didn't have much of an appetite, so it wasn't too disappointing for her. Overall I thought my food and burger paired decently. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but if I lived in the area I could see myself coming by sometimes.

Travelers searching for beer might find Bites and Pints underwhelming. The small tap list features drinkable but unremarkable beers which are widely available. If you wanted to bring beer over from The Local Pub that would solve this issue but still doesn't make Bites and Pints a beer destination. The food is decent and cheap, but there are plenty of places to get a reasonably priced burger. The service and music were both good and kept up with the inviting atmosphere I found all over Athens. If you find yourself with the drunk munchies at The Local Pub then certainly stop by, but I wouldn't make Bites and Pints a beer destination for your night out.

Overall: 6/10

Hi, I'm Colin, I love a good hoppy IPA, but I can find immense enjoyment in a solid session beer, imperial stout, quadrupel or a nostalgic beer from my past.
